How many of ya'll have heard of, or know what, a mystery quilt is?
*Mystery Quilt – A quilt pattern written in different steps that are disclosed one at a time in order to hide the appearance of the finished quilt.*
Last fall, my mother-in-law was finishing up a remodel to open up her own quilt retreat. She was planning to host a group of quilter friends for a trial run of the retreat and asked me to create a mystery quilt pattern for the trial run.
Now, I have actually been to a mystery quilt retreat before. I loved it! But writing the pattern, whew, that was a whole new ballgame! Trying to come up with an idea that quilters wouldn't be able to put together the finish product until the last step was a challenge -- turns out it was a challenge really enjoyed!
After a few, okay, multiple revisions, the Simply Southern Quilt was born -- a twist on a traditional star mixed with a two-toned Irish chain.
This pattern is written for use as a mystery quilt. It is meant to only be read one page at a time, and not look ahead before each individual step is completed.
Simply Southern Quilt is an advanced beginner quilt. As long as you label and stay aware of block orientation, you are good to go!
After much thought on how to release a mystery pattern, I settle on keeping the format written for a mystery and offering a package to purchase a mystery kit.
